Network Engineer/System Administrator for the Operations Group

Vail Systems is seeking a Senior Network Engineer/System Administrator to lead in architecting, maintaining, monitoring, and securing IP networks with strong high-availability requirements. This is a position at an engineering shop with a mostly unix environment. We're interested in hiring a network engineer/system administrator with experience with dynamic routing protocols OSPF and BGP, designing IP networks, router and switch configuration, debugging at the protocol level by running packet traces, unix system administrator expertise, shell scripting, Perl, C/C++. 
 
Responsibilities include:

  • Participate/lead in network architecture. The network is a multi-homed BGP non-transit AS.
  • WAN connectivity solutions for partners and customers.
  • Securing networks and hosts. Designing, building, and monitoring both network and host intrusion detection systems.
  • Managing and building flash-based BSD routers running Zebra or Quagga suite of dynamic routing protocols. 
  • Debugging arbitrary network and host problems. 
  • Create and maintain network documentation. 
  • Establishing/recommending policies on system use and services. 
  • Provides technical lead and supervises system and network administrators. 

Requirements:

  • Administrator-level experience with Solaris, xBSD, and/or Linux. 
  • Experience with Ethernet switch management, e.g. Cisco, Extreme, Foundry. 
  • Experience running a large, complex site or network preferred. 
  • Experience running/designing BGP networks strongly preferred.
  • A solid understanding of an operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communications, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions), can use performance analysis to tune systems. 
  • Experience installing operating systems to run off of read-only media a plus. 
  • A solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts; understands principles of routing, client/server programming, the design of consistent network-wide filesystem layouts. Ability to debug network and systems problems with distributed software applications. 
  • Ability to program in an administrative language (Perl, Tk, a shell), to port C programs from one platform to another, and to write small C or C++ programs. 
  • System performance tuning experience a plus. 
  • Experience automating OS installs a plus, e.g. Solaris Jumpstart, RedHat KickStart. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, making presentations to customers or client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper management. 
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and automate processes. 
  • Experience with packaging and configuration management a plus. 
  • B.A. / B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field.
